Creating a More Sustainable Kitchen
By Lighter Home Goods ·
A practical lower-waste kitchen starts with using the tools you own, storing food so you can see it, and choosing reusable replacements when something actually needs replacing.
Organize food before buying more storage
Group opened ingredients together and keep leftovers where they are easy to notice. Label containers with their contents and date. A visible shelf for food to use first can be more useful than a new gadget.
How should you compare food containers?
Check capacity, lid fit, care instructions, and the temperatures the manufacturer allows. Confirm microwave, freezer, and dishwasher suitability rather than assuming it from the material. Choose shapes that fit your shelves and lunches.
Which tools deserve a place in the kitchen?
Choose items for tasks you actually do. A cutting board, colander, and utensils can serve many meals; a single-purpose tool may need more storage than its occasional use justifies. Repair or replace individual pieces where possible.
What about composting?
Before choosing a kitchen collection bin, decide where its contents will go. Check the rules of your local collection service or the needs of your own compost system. A countertop bin collects scraps; it does not by itself turn them into compost.
