Reducing Waste Before You Recycle

By Lighter Home Goods ·

Reduce unnecessary purchases and reuse workable items first. For waste that remains, follow your local recycling program's accepted-material list; an item's packaging or recycling symbol is not a guarantee of local acceptance.

What can you avoid creating?

Choose quantities you can use and avoid duplicate tools. Before buying an organizer, sort what needs organizing. Before replacing a container, check whether a clean container you already own serves the same purpose.

Reuse with a clear purpose

Keep items you expect to use, rather than storing everything indefinitely. Reuse sturdy shopping bags and suitable containers. Donate usable items through an organization that accepts them; check its requirements first.

How should you sort recyclables?

Your collection provider's instructions are the deciding reference. Check its rules for material types, preparation, lids, bags, and special drop-off items. Do not rely on a general online list when your local provider gives different instructions.

Make the system easy to follow

Put a short accepted-items list near your recycling container. Set aside uncertain items until you can check. A small, clear system is easier for everyone in the household to use than several unlabeled bins.
